Hidden Gems: Family-Friendly Activities in the D.C. Area


A morning stroll along the National Mall, an afternoon exploring the National Museum of Natural History, a day out at the ballgame at Nationals Park — you may already know the staples of a great day with your family in Washington, D.C. But there’s plenty more to enjoy in our nation’s capital than the usual destinations.

Here are some of our favorite family-friendly activities in D.C. that you may have missed:

National Postal Museum

Part of the Smithsonian Institute, the National Postal Museum puts America’s mail service history on display. Located near Capitol Hill and Union Station, this museum features one of the world’s most comprehensive collections of stamps, as well as airplanes, mail coaches, trains and other incredible displays that chronicle the history of our nation’s postal services. As with all Smithsonian museums, admission is free!

United States Botanic Garden

Established in 1820, the U.S. Botanic Garden fulfills an original vision by George Washington to demonstrate and promote the importance of plants in our lives. With a number of programs and events, as well as the kid-friendly Children’s Garden, the U.S. Botanic Garden is a great destination for visitors of all ages.

National Building Museum

The National Building Museum is America’s leading cultural institution devoted to telling stories of architecture, engineering and design. This highly praised museum is located just four blocks from the National Mall and includes exhibitions, public programs and festivals throughout the year. And with its wide variety of everyday activities specifically designed for kids, the National Building Museum will be something the whole family can enjoy.
