5 Museums to Explore in Prince George’s County This Winter

With the cold winter weather limiting the number of activities families can enjoy, it’s always good to have some fun, indoor ideas in your back pocket for family time. Fortunately for BeechTree residents, Prince George’s County is home to an exceptional variety of museums. Here are five of our favorites.

Belair Mansion (Bowie, MD) Built in 1745, Belair Mansion is one of nearby Bowie’s oldest historic sites. The mansion now hosts a wide array of artifacts, including original art and portraits, a family silver collection and more, after  having served as a residence for a number of notable Americans over its 270-year history. The museum is open from 12pm-4pm, Tuesday through Sunday, and admission is free.

Belair Stable Museum (Bowie, MD) As one of the country’s premier horse stables until the 1950s, Belair Stable has been home to some of horse racing’s finest steeds. Today, the Stable Museum highlights the accomplishments of a racing legacy that spans over 200 years. Located just a block from Belair Mansion, the museum is open from 12pm-4pm, Tuesday through Sunday, and admission is free.

College Park Aviation Museum (College Park, MD) Opened in 1998, the College Park Aviation Museum is a 27,000-square-foot facility located on the grounds of the oldest continuously operating airport in College Park, MD. The museum contains historic and reproduction aircraft that are associated with the storied airfield, as well as hands-on activities for children of all ages. And with exhibits and programs changing every month, there’s always something new to see. The museum is open daily from 10am-5pm, and admission ranges from $2 for children and $5 for adults.

Prince George’s African American Museum & Cultural Center (Brentwood, MD) The African American Museum & Cultural Center is home to a wide variety of exhibitions, activities, workshops and programs that highlight and celebrate the cultural and artistic contributions of African Americans in Prince George’s County. The gallery is open from 10am-5pm, Tuesday through Sunday, and admission is $5 for adults. Additional events and activities are listed on the museum calendar.

NASA Goddard Visitor Center (Greenbelt, MD) Showcasing the very best of NASA’s work in earth science, astrophysics, planetary science and more, the Goddard Visitor Center features numerous exhibits and programs to be explored and enjoyed by visitors of all ages. Bring the whole family to enjoy the exciting and informative ongoing exhibits, or stop by for one of the regular events. Visitor Center hours vary by month, but admission is always free.
