Choosing Between a Single-Family Home and Townhome? Ask Yourself These 3 Questions.

Searching for a new home but still not sure whether to choose a single-family home or townhome for your family? It’s not always the easiest decision to make, but these are the three questions you can ask to help you decide quicker.

How much space do I need?

This might be the most important question you need to ask during your new home search. If you’ve got a growing family that’s only going to keep getting bigger, a single-family home might be your best bet. With that said, it’s important to remember that although townhomes generally have smaller footprints, many also offer spacious floorplans that are separated across different levels.

Take a look at your belongings and the size of your family and determine what amount of space is going to be most comfortable for you. This will often give you your first indication of what kind of home design you should choose.

Am I the type of person who likes doing yard work or maintenance?

Some people love the feeling of accomplishment they get after mowing the lawn, spreading mulch or planting a garden. Others, not so much.

If you’re the type of person who just can’t stand the weekly routine of having to mow a large lawn, shovel a big driveway or just take care of your home’s regular needs, you’re probably better off leaning towards a townhome. If you can handle paying for a landscaping company or don’t mind doing it all yourself, the regular upkeep needed shouldn’t deter you from a single-family home.

How much privacy do I want?

Don’t worry, you’ll still find plenty of privacy in a townhome. But you will be connected to your neighbors, so there will always be more privacy to be had in a single-family home.

What it comes down to is whether or not you’re the type of person who is willing to share a wall with your neighbors. If you don’t mind it, a townhome won’t be a problem.
